Friends, we all know that “Sunday” is a holiday, the person who gave Indians a holiday is “Narayan Meghaji Lokhande (1848- 1897).” He is also known as the pioneer of worker movement in India.

1.Narayan Lokhande was an activist of Jyotiram Phule’s Satya Shodhak Sanstha and also a leader of workers.
2. During the time of the British, workers had to work seven days a week.
3.Narayan Lokhande believed that “We work seven days in a week to fulfill the needs of the family but the society which has given us jobs, the laborers should get one day off in a week to solve the problems of that society.”
4. For this he proposed to the British in AD 1881 but the British rejected this proposal.
5.Hence Narayan Meghaji Lokhande for a weekly holiday of Sunday in AD. In 1881 started a movement against the British.
6. Everyone accepted this movement and hence this movement grew day by day.
7. This movement lasted for about 8 years.
8.Finally the British caved in to the movement and declared a Sunday holiday on 10th June 1890.
9. Thus, with the help of Narayan Meghaji Lokhande, we all got Ravivar holiday, so we are all grateful to Narayan Meghaji Lokhande.
